Hi Neighbor!

Tomorrow is Primary Election Day! Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Throughout the state, voters of either political party will be able to vote for candidates they want to see on the ballot in November’s municipal election.

Voting is a right, not a privilege – that’s why I voted in support of The Voting Rights Protection Act this week in Harrisburg. I believe everyone should be able to safely and easily cast their vote, and the Voting Rights Protection Act provides for that in so many ways.

Watch the video below to hear my thoughts on this important legislation and how it will better serve our community.

Afterward, read on for more about:

  • Keeping transit available and affordable
  • SEPTA’s upcoming public hearings
  • The Annual K. Leroy Irvis Days of Action
  • Improving childcare and early education
  • Diversifying PennDOT
  • My May 23 Veterans Discount ID Clinic

Warmest regards,

KEEPING TRANSIT AVAILABLE AND AFFORDABLE

Last week I joined colleagues, advocates, union members and Transit for All PA at a rally in Harrisburg for transit funding. Without effective public transit systems, accessing essential needs – like jobs and health care – becomes increasingly difficult. I stand by financial support for existing transit, and by expanding transit systems, so that we can all keep moving toward growth and success.

Today, I joined several other state representatives and state senators from Greater Philadelphia in rallying at SEPTA headquarters ahead of their 11 a.m. 2026 Public Budget Hearing. We traveled downtown via SEPTA from suburban and city stations to show how integral maintaining our routes are to a strong and efficient transit system.

SEPTA PUBLIC HEARINGS

Speaking of transit, SEPTA is hosting public hearings on their 2026 Operational Budget proposal, which includes significant fare hikes and service reductions. You can see the proposed budget on SETPA’s website here.

In addition to the hearings on SEPTA’s proposed budget, there will also be two public hearings on the proposed Capital Budget. The public is welcome to speak at any of these hearings, but must register before the meetings start.

You can attend in-person in the board room at SEPTA Headquarters at 1234 Market Street, Mezzanine Level, Philadelphia, PA 19107, or online via WebEx.

SEPTA Budget Proposal

  • May 19 at 5 p.m.
  • May 20 at 10 a.m. or 4 p.m.

Capital Budget Proposal

  • May 21 at 10 a.m. or 4 p.m.

K. LEROY IRVIS DAYS OF ACTION

K. Leroy Irvis was a longtime Pennsylvania legislator, champion of public education and the state’s first Black Speaker of the House. This year was the 4th Annual K. Leroy Irvis Days of Action in Harrisburg, two days of programming organized in his honor by the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus.

As part of the PLBC, I spoke on one panel called “Healing Voices: A Mental Wellness Panel for Black Men and Women.” We covered mental and physical health challenges, disparities in health care access, and the need for more equitable approaches to care – with a focus on integrating mental health into overall well-being.

To close out my Days of Action, I attended a lunch honoring the recipients of the 2025 James R. Roebuck Scholarship Awards. Congratulations to all our 2025 recipients!

IMPROVING CHILDCARE AND EARLY EDUCATION

This week I met up with First Up – Champions for Early Education to discuss the best ways to ensure every child 8 and under has access to high quality care and education – and that includes increased childcare subsidies. I’m dedicated to working toward higher wages for childcare workers across Southeastern PA, because better conditions for childcare workers means better care and education for our youngest kids.

MORE DIVERSITY, BETTER SUPPORT AT PENNDOT

Montgomery County OIC recently met with me to discuss their new training program aimed at diversifying the customer support workforce at PennDOT. A nonprofit organization, Montgomery County OIC provides literacy and life skills programs in high-demand fields, like technology, hospitality, skilled trades, and health care. Their program will make people workforce-ready and fill a gap in access at PennDOT.
