Get Updated with Greg: Immigration rights resources, Legislative updates, and more
Hi Neighbor!
Many of you have heard the news that this past week, ICE made several arrests throughout our community.
The phrase “Our diversity is our strength” echoes the importance of unity and resilience during times of uncertainty. I believe our community flourishes with cultural richness thanks to the wonderfully unique wisdom and traditions our residents bring to the table.
If you want to know your rights or are an ally looking to show support, here are some resources:
- Villanova CARES Clinic (610) 519-5894
- HIAS PA (215) 832-0900
- Montgomery County Immigrant Resource Center (610) 278-3020
Another effective way to support our community is by shopping at our local stores and dining in our restaurants to help our local economy. In unity we discover the power of strength.
We had a successful first week of June at the state Capitol. My House colleagues and I passed some legislation to help our neighbors and communities, I spoke on some important topics, and I welcomed several visitors to the House chamber. Have a great week back home!
In this week’s edition of Get Updated with Greg, read about:
- Legislative update from June 2-6
- The importance of social workers in our communities
- The Norristown Area High School champion robotics team
- Meeting with Colonial Middle School students
- Welcoming guests to the House chamber
- Supporting labor rights
- Working against PFAS chemicals
- The Teen Senate Program
- Immigrant Heritage Month Block Party
Warmest regards,
Legislative Update: June 2 – 6
This week, my House Democratic colleagues and I passed important bills that will help our neighbors and improve our communities:
We’re ensuring access to affordable health care by requiring health insurance coverage for contraceptives (HB 1140).
We’re protecting consumers by banning “speculative ticketing,” a practice that allows unofficial sellers to list tickets for sale even though they do not actually possess – and may never have – those tickets (HB 463).
We’re supporting seniors and individuals with disabilities who qualify for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program by permitting these rebate payments to be issued at any time after an application is filed and approved by the Department of Revenue instead of having to wait until July 1 or later to receive their rebates (HB 1072).
Speaking on Social Workers, Champions of Our Communities
On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of speaking at a news conference organized by the National Association of Social Workers to bring awareness of the roles social workers play in our society and how the state government can better support them. I talked about the ways I’ve relied on social workers throughout my life, from using them as a resource growing up to using them as supports for the people I saw in court during my time as a district judge. Watch the video above to learn more.
Congratulations to Our Future Robotics Experts!
I proudly welcomed the Norristown Area School District’s Robotics Team to Harrisburg last week in honor of their win in the State VEX Robotics Competition earlier this year! The high school team headed to Dallas to compete in VEX Robotics World Championship. Many thanks to the team for representing Norristown and Pennsylvania – your talent will take you far!
A Day with Students from Colonial Middle School
On Tuesday, I got to spend my workday with students from Colonial Middle School, giving them a first-hand look at what we do as legislators in Harrisburg. I met with members of Voices for Education, a partnership with Montgomery County IU and Children First, to discuss education policy and the role of state government. I hope they learned from me just as much as I learned from them.
More Warm Welcomes
In addition to the robotics team and Colonial Middle School, I welcomed members of IBEW Local 98 and students from Pottstown to the House Chamber. Thank you for joining me!
Supporting Labor Rights
As you know, I’m a strong supporter of labor rights and the work of unions in the Commonwealth. I recently had the opportunity to meet with members of UAW while they were in Harrisburg for their conference. They represent 30,000 active and retired members throughout PA, safeguarding labor rights for all.
Working Against Toxic PFAS Chemicals
While in Harrisburg I also met with Clean Water Action – Pennsylvania to talk about HB 1261, which would ban PFAS chemicals in firefighting foam and protective gear. It also helps local fire departments safely dispose of materials they may already own that contain PFAS chemicals. Thank you to everyone who attended for their support.
Access Services Teen Senate Program
On Wednesday, I met with the Teen Senate Program, a group of young advocates who work on a community service project together. This group worked on a campaign to educate local businesses on the dangers of vape products and selling them to minors. All the participants have received mental health advocacy and support training through Access Services. Great work!
Immigrant Heritage Month Block Party
On Thursday, my Chief of Staff Buck Jones attended the first-ever Immigrant Heritage Month Block Party at the steps of the Montgomery County Court House. This dynamic celebration featured music, food trucks, and speakers who paid tribute to the extraordinary stories, sounds, traditions, and everyday contributions of Montgomery County’s immigrant communities.
