Montgomery County Finance Department Encourages Eligible Residents to Apply for Tax Assistance

NORRISTOWN, PA – The Montgomery County Finance Department is reminding county homeowners and renters that they may be eligible for tax assistance to defer or reduce their county tax, property tax, or rent payments.

 

This week, December 19-23, 2022, the Montgomery County Finance Department will hold open office hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to answer questions regarding the County’s Real Estate Tax Deferral Program and the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue Property Tax and Rent Rebate Program. Residents can contact the Finance Department through the following ways:

Montgomery County Real Estate Tax Deferral Program

Through Act 301 of 1999, eligible residents can apply for the deferral (postponement) of payment of increases in real estate taxes. The Montgomery County Board of Commissioners made this deferral program available to eligible property owners for County real estate taxes effective January 1, 2021.

 

Participants must be:

·     Homeowners who are at least 65 years of age by December 31 of the year in which the applications are made.

·     Those whose household income is $35,000 or less (includes 50% of social security income).

·     Those who have owned and occupied the qualifying property for at least the last twelve (12) months.

·     Those who have fire or casualty insurance coverage for the qualifying property in an amount not less than the amount of the taxes being deferred.

·     Those who do not owe outstanding property tax or special assessments.

·     Those who have written approval from the spouse, if filing jointly, or Trustee, if the property is held in a qualifying Trust, to participate in the program.

 

Applications are available online at www.montcopa.org/finance and in person at the Montgomery County Finance Department located at One Montgomery Plaza, 425 Swede Street, Suite 801, Norristown, PA 19401. Applications will be accepted January 1 through the October 31 application deadline. Pennsylvania Property Tax and Rent Rebate Program – Deadline approaching

The rebate program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians aged 65 and older; widows and widowers aged 50 and older; and people with disabilities age 18 and older. The income limit is $35,000 a year for homeowners and $15,000 annually for renters, and half of Social Security income is excluded. Spouses, personal representatives, or estates may also file rebate claims on behalf of claimants who lived at least one day in 2021 and meet all other eligibility criteria.

 

The maximum standard rebate is $650, but supplemental rebates for qualifying homeowners can boost rebates to $975.

 

Homeowners:

·     Income of $0 to $8,000; eligible for rebate of $650

·     Income of $8,001 to $15,000; eligible for rebate of $500

·     Income of $15,001 to $18,000; eligible for rebate of $300

·     Income of $18,001 to $35,000; eligible for rebate of $250

 

Renters:

·     Income of $0 to $8,000; eligible for rebate of $650

·     Income of $8,001 to $15,000; eligible for rebate of $500

 

Property Tax and Rent Rebate application assistance is available at no cost from Department of Revenue district offices, local Area Agencies on Aging, senior centers and state legislators’ offices.
